Renovation of the parquet flooring in the historic Amélie Moser Stube

The Gasthof Kreuz in Herzogenbuchsee looks back on an eventful history: first mentioned in records in 1624, the building was taken over in 1890 by the Herzogenbuchsee Women’s Association under the leadership of Amélie Moser and opened in 1891 as Switzerland’s first alcohol-free community centre—the ‘Arbeiterheim zum Kreuz’. Today’s Amélie Moser Stube commemorates its founder and her commitment to education and women’s rights.

The parquet floor in the historic Amélie Moser Stube had been treated with a surface sealant. This posed a risk of damage to the historic parquet: moisture was constantly seeping beneath the sealant through cracks in the coating. For this reason, the solid panel parquet, made of oak and beech, was sanded down and the unsuitable sealant removed. The joints were filled and the floor was washed with a damp cloth using wood floor soap. After a thorough drying period, it was treated twice with a natural oil and polished.
